Cataract surgery removes the part of the lens inside an eye that has become cloudy due to age, diabetes or trauma. An intraocular lens implant is inserted into the eye to replace the natural eye lens. Nearly 3 million people a year have cataract surgery in this country, making it the most commonly performed surgery of any kind. Typically, people see better after cataract surgery, but unless special additional options are selected, patients may need glasses to see optimally.
CHA now offers patients premium options for their cataract surgery using a FEMTOSECOND laser for precision, and special refractive intraocular lens implants. The laser-assisted options can make patients less dependent upon glasses after surgery by correcting astigmatism and presbyopia (difficulty adjusting to focus at near to read or work on a computer).
As part of cataract surgery, you will have a permanent lens implanted into your eye. Standard lens implants have been around for a long time and usually give people good vision to see far away but may still require you to wear glasses to read. Premium lens implants can allow you to see well at distance and near for many activities without reading glasses.
