CHA Nursing

CHA nurses are amazing! They are leaders on the floors, in our care centers and in our communities. Every day, our nurses focus on patient care, safety, advocacy, and improvement, bringing Care to the People in so many ways.

CHA has become a nationally recognized health system, thanks in large part to our nurses. We were proud in 2022 to be named one of the nation’s top Maternity Hospitals by Newsweek for the second straight year.

Whether you are a new grad or an experienced nurse, CHA is full of opportunities. We invite you to learn more about our positions, our passions and our diverse patients.

Welcome to CHA

Thank you for Visiting!

What's New in Nursing at CHA?

CHA recently launched a multi-year initiative to revitalize and expand our inpatient psychiatry services to meet community needs. This effort includes brand new child & adolescent units at the CHA Somerville Campus, including specialized neurodevelopmental beds, and new psychiatry units at CHA Cambridge Hospital.

Code Sunshine!

Code Sunshine started in 2020 to celebrate the victories of patients discharged after surviving COVID. Every time this happens, CHA plays “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles in the hallways at CHA Cambridge and Everett Hospitals. Learn more about this great tribute to our patients on the CHA "Healthy Now" Blog.

Recognizing Excellence

DAISY Award:

We are so proud of our Daisy Award winning nurses recognized for their amazing patient care!

Christine Baglio, RN, a nurse at the CHA Malden Care Center, won a DAISY Award after being nominated by seven colleagues! They said: “She takes ownership of our patients, especially our prenatal patients. She empathetically listens to patient concerns, allays their anxieties, develops patient-centered care plans, asks questions of colleagues when she's not sure what to do next, and schedules follow-up in a timely fashion.”

Grace Poirier, LPN, from our Malden substance use disorder clinic, was nominated by a patient who explained she shows patience and kindness, and is “down to earth (talking with you, not at you)” and shows she cares by following through.

Kerry Marchese, RN, a pre-op nurse at CHA Everett Hospital, was nominated by a patient who said, "Kerry was the ideal nurse to have on the day of my first-ever surgery. She put me at ease with her kind and generous personality, and her highly competent patient care. Her compassionate communication really stood out to me as an example for all medical providers."

Jennifer Wallace, RN, an Emergency nurse at CHA Cambridge Hospital, is known to go “above and beyond to ensure the comfort of patients and families. She treats all people with respect and courtesy and has a positive attitude at all times. She has been a role model of informal leader, cheerleader and main support for all ED staff".

Theresa Perry, RN, from 6 North at CHA Cambridge Hospital recently received the award. Theresa has been an RN here since 2007 and was nominated by a patient who said she was "very attentive and went above and beyond."

CHA Nurses Honored by the Red Sox

CHA nurses honored at Red Sox nurse night: Two of the six New England nurses honored by Nurse.org at the recent Boston Red Sox Nurse Night were from CHA! Congratulations to Melissa Abell-Bardsley, RN, an OB clinical educator, and Jennifer Wallace, RN, from our Emergency Department.

Nursing Practice Areas

CHA nurses work at the top of their license across our regional health system. Learn more about the many different practice areas below:

  • Where our Nurses Practice

Ambulatory Specialty Services: CHA has ambulatory medicine, orthopedic, and surgery clinics at sites across our system. This includes two stand-alone eye clinics, and three individual medical specialty, orthopedic and surgical service clinics. CHA also has the Zinberg clinic for HIV care.

Elder Care: CHA PACE provides healthcare and other support for adults 55 and older who need extra care to continue living at home. We are part of the national Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and provide care at our PACE Centers and in the community. CHA also offers a House Calls program and Nursing Home program that offers primary care services where patients live.

Emergency Department: CHA provides 24 hour emergency care at our two acute care hospitals - Cambridge Hospital and Everett Hospital. Our busy teams care for patients during approximately 85,000 annual visits. We also have special services for patients with psychiatry and addiction needs -- including a special Psychiatry Emergency Service and Recovery Coaches.

Interventional Radiology: The CHA interventional radiology team is nationally recognized and highly skilled practitioners who are well versed in using the latest imaging technology and techniques at Cambridge Hospital.

Maternity and Women’s Health: CHA is proud to help growing families. We have been named one of Newsweek’s Best Maternity Hospitals for 2021-2023 and our maternity unit at Cambridge Hospital has 1,100 deliveries yearly. We also provide care at three ambulatory Women’s Health centers, in Cambridge, Somerville and Revere.

Med/Surg and ICU. CHA offers acute care services at both Cambridge Hospital and Everett Hospital, including ICUs at both campuses. As a safety net community hospital, we handle a wide range of patient needs. Our patients come from across the globe, allowing us to see a wide range of cases. Because we are a teaching hospital, with a strong Psychiatry service, our Med/Surg and ICU nurses work hand-in-hand with residents and medical, and benefit from having timely access to Psychiatry consult services.

Nursing Education: CHA has both central and department-based nursing educators that are experts in adult learning, curriculum design and program evaluation. As a team, the education department fulfills all initial and ongoing education and competency requirements through creative educational strategies. Our team also promotes professional development through certification, advanced degrees, continuing education opportunities, and engagement in professional organizations.

Occupational Health: The CHA Occupational Health program is located at Assembly Square in Somerville. Nurses here support the care of employees at CHA and many other client companies throughout the Boston area.

Peri-op: Perioperative nurses are key members of the care team in Orthopedics, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Urology, Plastics, Podiatry, Vascular, Endoscopy and other procedural services. CHA has full-service ORs at Cambridge and Everett Hospitals, and a GI procedure suite at the Somerville Campus.

Primary Care: CHA has 13 primary care sites and three teen centers in Cambridge, Everett, Malden, Revere, and Somerville, MA. Nurses work hand-in-hand with a team of providers to ensure the best patient outcomes.

Psychiatry: CHA offers inpatient and outpatient services for all ages, including dedicated hospital units for children, adolescents, adults and seniors. In 2021 and 2022, CHA completed a major expansion of inpatient psychiatry services, opening a brand new child & adolescent inpatient center at the CHA Somerville Campus, and new adult units in Cambridge.

Public Health and School Health Nursing: Since 1996, CHA has operated the Cambridge Public Health Department through a municipal contract with the City. Nurses are vital to this work. The Division of Public Health Nursing focuses on communicable disease prevention and control, including response to new health threats such as pandemic flu, SARS, and bioterrorism. Services include a TB program, flu clinics, disease investigation and follow up, and health education for residents, workers, and businesses. The School Health Program is dedicated to helping Cambridge public school students (grades K–12) stay healthy and in school so they can reach their academic potential. Services include school nursing, school nutrition, hearing and vision screening, and consultation to the city’s nonpublic schools.

Urgent Care: The CHA Urgent Care center at the Somerville Campus meets the needs of Somerville and surrounding communities. Our Urgent Care center is open 7 days a week and offers a wide range of care, including IV infusions and dehydration care.
