Prenatal Care

Choose prenatal care at a CHA Obstetrics and Gynecology Center (Cambridge, Revere, Somerville), the Cambridge Birth Center (see below) or at several CHA primary care centers.

McGovern Maternity Suite, CHA Cambridge Hospital

The Maternity Suite and Level I nursery at CHA Cambridge Hospital provide tender and thoughtful care during labor, delivery and your postpartum stay. Your nurses will support you through your labor and recovery using their wealth of knowledge and experience. Each of our large rooms has a Jacuzzi tub and TV, and many have views of downtown Boston. You’ll have access to our 24-hour Anesthesia Service. And your new baby will be in good hands with our 24-hour Pediatrics team from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Come See For Yourself!

Meet our caring OB/GYN providers and visit the McGovern Maternity Suite at a Meet the Doctors event. Find out more here. We also offer tours of the maternity floor by appointment. Please call 617-665-1374 Monday-Friday 7am-3:30pm to schedule a visit. The tours will take place on the 5th floor of CHA Cambridge Hospital. Learn what to expect before you come to the hospital to deliver your baby.

Meet our Family Medicine OB Doctors and take a tour of the unit in March, June, September and December. Sign up in MyChart, with your Family Medicine prenatal provider or call the Department of Family Medicine at 617-665-3448. You will receive an invitation one month ahead of the next event. Find out more here.

CHA Cambridge Birth Center

Have your baby with our amazing Midwives

The Cambridge Birth Center is an intimate, warm, home-like setting right across the street from the hospital. That's why so many women with a low risk pregnancy see us as a great choice.

CHA is committed to maternal health equity and is moving forward with plans to reopen the CHA Birth Center. Construction is underway to renovate and update the three birthing rooms to ensure a welcoming and comfortable environment for patients and families. To improve equity and outcomes, CHA is working with community groups to develop education and outreach strategies for underserved communities to raise awareness about the benefits of midwifery and birth center care. Check back later this year for additional updates.

All midwifery deliveries are temporarily relocated to the McGovern Maternity Suite at CHA Cambridge Hospital. Starting on March 11, while the Cambridge Birth Center is under renovation, all midwifery prenatal visits will be seen elsewhere. Please call 617-665-2229 to confirm your upcoming appointments.

When we reopen, why Choose the Cambridge Birth Center?

  • Comfort: Our rooms give you what you need during your birth experience including jacuzzi bathtubs, a family room, kitchen, living room, garden and elevator. You can get all your prenatal care in our exam rooms and access our child’s play area.
  • Movement: During your labor, you will have the freedom to move about the home, including in the garden.
  • Warmth: Choosing the Cambridge Birth Center means you choose to give birth with a midwife. Your midwife will understand your personal needs and provide the caring touch that puts you at the center of your childbirth experience.
  • Welcoming: Your midwife will include your family as much as you want.
  • We are a Baby Friendly Facility based on the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nation Children's Fund (UNICEF) guidelines.

CHA Doula Program - Bringing a world of wisdom to your birth

A CHA Doula helping a mother prepare for their birth in the hospital

A doula is trained to encourage, comfort, and support you and your family during labor and after birth. Doulas offer physical, emotional, social and educational support. They know you, facilitate conversation with medical care givers, and help you have the birth experience you want. While doulas do not provide medical care, they use the latest evidence-based practices and cultural wisdom to work alongside CHA midwives, nurses and doctors as a trusted part of the healthcare team.

People with doulas often have shorter labors and less need for medical interventions like pitocin, anesthesia, and cesareans. They usually feel calmer, more able to manage pain, and more satisfied with their births. Doula support increases successful breastfeeding and a smoother transition to parenthood.

CHA pregnant patients facing health or social challenges may be eligible for free Doula support. Ask your provider to find out if you qualify.
