MIDWIVES
Our certificated Nurse-Midwives provide expert, personalized
healthcare and support to women of all ages and backgrounds. They
are trained in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery, and
are certified by The American College of Nurse-Midwives. In Massachusetts,
Nurse-Midwives are licensed as advanced practice nurses and are
authorized to write prescriptions.
Our midwives, many of whom are bicultural and bilingual,
provide complete care throughout your pregnancy, labor and birth,
including prenatal physical exams; lab work; individualized teaching;
treatment of common health problems, referrals for amniocentesis
and ultrasound; and natural childbirth.
You don't have to be pregnant to see a midwife! The
Cambridge Midwives also provide well-woman care including annual
GYN exams and pap smears; family planning; preconceptual counseling;
safe sex counseling, and diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted
diseases.

Christley Harris, CNM
Education/Training: King Edward Memorial Hospital, England, Frontier
School of Nursing, Kentucky, Boston University School of Public
Health
Certification: Nurse midwife
"I obtained my nursing and midwifery education
in London from 1966-1971. I then moved to the United States and
then worked at Mount Auburn Hospital as a labor and delivery nurse.
Late in my career at Mt Auburn I felt a desire to return to midwifery.
I was recertified as a midwife in Kentucky and I am also certified
by the American College of Nurse Midwives. I earned a certificate
in maternal and child health from the BU school of health."
"Currently, I practice with the Cambridge Midwives
at The Cambridge Birth Center. The diversity of the women I serve
through my practice is what gives me the greatest pleasure. In my
free time, I enjoy being with my family, gourmet cooking, and traveling."

Connie Breece, CNM
Education/Training: Yale University School of Nursing, Connecticut
Certification: Nurse Midwife
"Since joining The Cambridge Midwives in 1988,
I have served women at various locations in the greater Boston area,
and now I focus my patient care at The Cambridge Birth Center. Prior
to becoming a certified nurse midwife, I was the Administrator/Teacher
of an alternative girls high school in Boston, and Director of Women's
Education at MCI Framingham. I love my work as a midwife and teacher,
and am particularly grateful for the chance to care for women from
many cultures and backgrounds. I am also a Certified Infant Massage
Instructor, fluent in Spanish, and live in Jamaica Plain with two
daughters, age two and six, who teach me daily about the joys of
being a parent."

Laurie Ososky, CNM
Education/Training: Columbia University; New England School of Homeopathy
Certification: Nurse Midwife
"Born at home, delivered by the local doctor
in a small town in Pennsylvania, I feel I was destined to become
a midwife! But it wasn't until much later that I studied midwifery
and healing at Columbia University. As a certified nurse midwife
for 8 years, I have delighted in the joy of attending births at
Quincy Hospital and now at The Cambridge Birth Center and The Cambridge
Hospital. I have studied and practiced homeopathic and herbal formulary
for our midwifery practice."

Ellen Lapowsky, CNM
Education training: University of Arizona Midwifery Program
Certification: Nurse Midwife
" I have been a certified nurse midwife for 16
years, and now that I am expecting my first child in several weeks,
I am feeling more like you than a midwife… wondering what my birth
will be like, and eagerly anticipating the huge changes about to
occur in my life.
Working at The Cambridge Hospital since 1992, I am
especially proud to be one of the founders of The Cambridge Birth
Center. Previously I worked at St. Margaret's hospital and Quincy
hospital. I love working with women and their families, helping
to create the birth experience they desire."

Nikki May, CNM
Education /training: Ohio State University: Frontier school of nursing,
Kentucky
Certification: Nurse Midwife
"My thirty-year career as a midwife has taken
me from the mountains of Kentucky where I attended home births on
horseback to neighborhood health centers, hospitals and birth centers
of Boston. I have a master's degree from Ohio State University and
was assistant professor of pediatric nursing there prior to training
as a midwife and family nurse-practitioner in Kentucky.
During my career were founder and director of midwifery
service at Brookside clinic in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts; worked
in rural health planning and ran my own business in Vermont. My
proudest accomplishment is being one of the founders of the Cambridge
Birth Center. Throughout my career it has been my privilege to care
for women from many countries. They have taught me much!"

Phary Her, CNM
Education/training: UMASS Amherst, University of Rhode Island
"I emigrated to the US from Cambodia as a refugee, grew up
in Rockland MA and graduated from UMASS Amherst with a bachelor
degree in Nursing. I had worked as a registered nurse in adult medical/surgical
as well as Labor and Delivery.
I then decided to pursue midwifery and graduated from the University
of Rhode Island with a Master's Degree in Nursing and a certificate
in Midwifery. I now see patients at The Cambridge Birth Center and
at Revere Family Health Center. My ability to speak Cambodian/Khmer
allows me to care for the large Southeast Asian population in the
Boston area. In my spare time I enjoy the company of my year-old
daughter Alexis and outdoor activities"

Jill Fieleke, CNM
Education/training: MGH Institute of the Health Professions
"I have been privileged to be a part of The Cambridge Midwives
since 2003, first as a student, and now as a midwife. Prior to returning
to midwifery school, I worked as a Nurse Practitioner in a Boston
community health center providing care to women throughout the lifespan.
I also ran a small business providing services as a doula, a childbirth
educator, and a lactation counselor.
I love that my work as a midwife encompasses all of my passions
- care for women and families, education, and connection with communities.
I have two children of my own, and in my free time I enjoy knitting
and quilting and tucking in with a good book."
