Cambridge Resident Named Vice Chair of Cambridge Health Alliance's Board of Trustees

Cambridge, MA…Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) today announced that Ellen Semonoff, Assistant City Manager for Human Services for the City of Cambridge, has been named Vice Chair of CHA's Board of Trustees. She is the first female Cambridge resident to assume the position.

"Ellen Semonoff brings considerable health and human services experience to her new role on the CHA Board, on which she's served since 1996," said Dennis Keefe, CHA's Chief Executive Officer. "The entire organization benefits from her extensive knowledge of policies, programs, and the people who deliver services in the community. We congratulate Ellen, who continues to be an invaluable asset to Cambridge Health Alliance."

"Cambridge Health Alliance provides much-needed community-based healthcare services to a diverse range of populations. It is an honor to continue promoting and growing CHA's unique mission," added Ms. Semonoff.

Ms. Semonoff has served the City of Cambridge for more than 17 years, providing leadership and management for all of the city's child care, community, fuel assistance, nutrition, recreation, senior, substance abuse, workforce development, and youth programs. She also oversees services for homeless and disabled residents and plays a major role in Cambridge's citywide Agenda for Children initiative. Other accomplishments include leading Cambridge's legislative and programmatic response to the end of rent control and negotiations that led to the formation of CHA.

Previously, Ms. Semonoff acted as Chair of the Cambridge Rent Control Board and practiced law in Washington, DC, and Boston. She served as a Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare during the Carter administration and as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Ms. Semonoff has served on a number of community and non-profit boards, including the Philips Brooks House Association's Board of Trustees, the State Advisory Council for the Department of Employment and Training, the Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust's Board of Trustees, and the National Advisory Mental Health Council. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Brandeis University and a Juris Doctor's degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard University Law School.

Cambridge Health Alliance is governed by a 19-member Board of Trustees. All members volunteer their time and expertise to further the mission, vision, and values of CHA.

Cambridge Health Alliance is an innovative, award-winning health system that provides high quality care in Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston's metro-north communities. It includes three hospital campuses, more than 20 primary care and specialty practices, the Cambridge Public Health Dept., and the Network Health plan. CHA is a Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate and is also affiliated with Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Tufts University School of Medicine.
