CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE FOUNDATION LEADER ELECTED CHAIR-ELECT DESIGNATE OF AMERICAN HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION BOARD

Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Revere, Somerville, Winthrop, MA...Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) announced today that the American Hospital Association's (AHA) Board of Trustees has elected Richard P. de Filippi, PhD, its chair-elect designate. De Filippi will assume the chairmanship in 2010, making him the top elected official of the largest hospital and health system association in the United States.

De Filippi is former chairman of the board of Cambridge Health Alliance and current board chair of CHA's Alliance Foundation. During his tenure, de Filippi has seen CHA grow tenfold from a single city owned hospital to a regional award winning health care system, as recognized by AHA with its Foster McGaw Award and by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in their Pursuing Perfection Program.

Prior to his chairmanship, de Filippi will become chairman-elect on Jan. 1, 2009. As chairman-elect, he will preside over AHA's strategic policy planning committee, which identifies the association's priority initiatives. De Filippi will succeed Thomas M. Priselac, president and chief executive officer of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, who as chairman-elect of the AHA will become its next chairman of the board.

"Hospitals are vital community organizations that can keep people and communities healthy and thriving," said de Filippi, who is the second hospital trustee to be named chairman-elect designate. "I'm proud to serve the hospital field in our efforts to improve health and health care in America."

As member of the AHA board, de Filippi serves on its Executive Committee and continues as the board's liaison to the association's Committee on Governance after completing a three year term on that committee. He has also served on AHA's New England Regional Policy Board. He is currently a member and former chair of the Trustee Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Hospital Association (MHA) and a former member of the MHA Board of Trustees.

De Filippi is managing partner of the Ariano Partnership, a consulting group that has worked largely with emerging technology based companies. He was founder and CEO of CF Systems Corporation, a chemical technology firm in the environmental field, ultimately purchased by Washington Engineering of Boise, Idaho (then Morrison Knudsen Corporation). Prior to that, he was a founder and technical vice president of Abcor, Inc., a bioengineering and separations technology company, which was merged into Koch Industries. He is currently on the Board of Directors of CeraMem Corporation in Waltham, Mass.

De Filippi earned a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in Amherst, Mass., and his master's and doctorate in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The American Hospital Association is a not-for-profit association of health care provider organizations that are committed to health improvement in their communities. AHA is the national advocate for its members, which include nearly 5,000 hospitals, health care systems, networks and other providers of care. Founded in 1898, AHA provides education for health care leaders and is a source of information on health care issues and trends.

Cambridge Health Alliance is an innovative, award-winning health system that provides high quality care in Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston's metro-north communities. It includes three hospital campuses, more than 20 primary care and specialty practices, the Cambridge Public Health Dept., and the Network Health plan. CHA is a Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate and is also affiliated with Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Tufts University School of Medicine.
