Institute for Community Health Launches Quick Confidential Phone Survey to Improve the Health of Residents in Local Communities

Community Residents are Urged to Please Respond to the Phone Survey

No Names or Addresses will be Collected from Survey Participants

Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Revere, Somerville, MA… From January through May of 2008, the Institute for Community Health (ICH), in collaboration with Cambridge Health Alliance, Massachusetts General Hospital, Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge Public Health Department, and Somerville Health Department, will be conducting the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) in the communities of Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Revere, and Somerville.

The BRFSS is a confidential telephone survey of residents age 19 and over. Participation is essential to ensure the creation and administration of health programs which will directly benefit residents of these communities. The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete. No names or addresses will be collected from survey participants. The surveys will be conducted in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

The sponsoring organizations have collaborated to design the survey and strongly encourage residents to answer the phone and complete it. The information collected will help to assess and improve the health status of residents in the local communities, identify local health issues, and design and monitor health promotion and disease prevention programs. Topics covered in the survey include cholesterol and hypertension awareness, receipt of cancer screenings, tobacco and alcohol use, exercise and physical activity, prevalence of asthma and diabetes, and access to health care. For further information, please contact: Alison Harris, (617) 499-8323.

The Institute for Community Health (ICH) is a non-profit research and evaluation organization funded as a collaborative project of three major hospital organizations: Cambridge Health Alliance, the Mount Auburn Hospital of CareGroup, and the Massachusetts General Hospital of Partners HealthCare. ICH was founded in 2000 to be a nationally recognized organization dedicated to health status improvement through facilitation and collaborative sponsorship of community-based research, evaluation, dissemination, and educational activities.
