NEWS FROM CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE

CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE CLINICIAN SECURES MAJOR GRANT TO TEACH SOCIAL SKILLS TO ADOLESCENTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS

Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Revere, Somerville, Winthrop, MA…Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) announced today that Dr. Karen Levine, Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School and Clinical Director of Autism and Developmental Disabilities at the CHA's Center for Child for Adolescent Development (CCAD), in conjunction with Matt Lerner, B.A. of the North Shore ARC of Danvers MA, are the recipients of the $80,000 Deborah Munroe Noonan Memorial Fund.

The grant will allow Dr. Levine and her collaborators to study a new "drama-based social pragmatic intervention" approach toward teaching social skills to adolescents with developmental disorders.

The project is titled: Drama-based social pragmatics intervention for adolescents with Asperger's Syndrome - a Pilot Effectiveness Study.

Dr. Levine will administer a controlled study incorporating multiple measures of efficiency, including survey responses, child-and parent-completed quantitative measures, and direct observation of participants, to test the clinical effectiveness of a drama-based intervention program. Dr. Levine hopes to build the participant's social pragmatic skills, such as receptive and expressive non-verbal accuracy, pro-social functioning, social responsiveness, in addition to decreasing symptoms of co-morbid depression.

The Deborah Munroe Noonan Memorial Fund, established in 1947, supports innovative and collaborative clinical research, demonstration projects and pilot studies in the Boston area that work to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities. Dr. Levine's project is one of five funded this cycle.
