NEWS FROM CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE
CAMBRIDGE HEALTH ALLIANCE SOCIAL WORKER, JANNA MALAMUD SMITH, AUTHORS
BOOK ON FAMOUS FATHER, BERNARD MALAMUD
Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Revere, Somerville,
Winthrop, MA….Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is celebrating long-term
employee Janna Malamud Smith, MSW, on the occasion of her new book,
My Father Is A Book: A Memoir of Bernard Malamud (Houghton Mifflin,
March 15, 2006). Smith is a social worker at CHA and a Lecturer
on Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry of Harvard Medical
School. March is Social Workers Month which gives Smith another
reason to celebrate! For more than twenty years, March has been
the month for social workers to attract positive attention on their
discipline.
On the twentieth anniversary of Malamud's death, Smith explores
her father's life. She draws an insightful and very personal portrait
in this book, the first to tell his life story. In the two decades
since her father's death, Smith realized that the once overshadowing
memory of her father was in danger of disappearing. After coming
to terms with her grief, raising a family, and building a career
of her own, Smith finally felt ready to share the personal side
of her father's life.
The novels and short stories of Bernard Malamud have made an important
and lasting impression on American culture. From his Pulitzer Prize-winning
novel The Fixer to his perhaps best loved The Natural and The Assistant,
which was named by the Time list of 100 Best Novels (1923 - present).
Malamud's writing illustrates timeless themes of suffering and redemption,
irony and comedy. Above all, his stirring works of fiction always
include memorable characters.
While his legacy as a Jewish American writer is well known, there
has never been an in-depth look into the personal aspects of Malamud's
life until now. My Father Is A Book is a fascinating revel of one
of America's literary geniuses, offering the personal thoughts and
life experiences behind Malamud's fiction. More than that, Smith's
memoir is a touching tribute to father-daughter relationships; a
beautiful example of a daughter's journey revisiting memories, reliving
conversations, and ultimately accepting who her father was - and
who she is.
