Thomas Smith
joined CHA from Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York where he
worked for 10 years, most recently as Chief Nursing Officer where
he led the work that resulted in Mount Sinai's designation as a
Magnet Hospital for nursing excellence.
Smith previously
worked at Massachusetts General Hospital as Chief of Intensive Care
and Pediatric Nursing Services and at Boston City Hospital as Director
of Nursing and Chief Nurse Executive. Smith has been part of numerous
professional organizations including; the American Association of
Colleges of Nursing, the American Organization of Nurse Executives,
National Student Nurses Association and the Advisory Board of Nursing
Spectrum. Smith is a nationally known nursing leader and has published
extensively, and has earned awards including the Grace Davidson
Award from the College of Nursing at New York University and the
Distinguished Service Award from the Mount Sinai Hospital School
of Nursing Alumnae Association.
He earned a
bachelor's degree in sociology at Brown University where he graduated
magna cum laude. He went on to earn a nursing degree at the University
of the State of New York, and later a master's in medical-surgical
nursing at the Boston University School of Nursing. He is also finishing
his doctoral degree at the Case Western Reserve University School
of Nursing.
