ABOUT THE CENTER FOR CHILD AND ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT (CCAD)

Based within the renowned Department of Psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance, the Center for Child and Adolescent Development is an extraordinary new clinical and research facility of exceptional expertise, innovation, and promise. Opened in 2005, the Center was established to provide high-quality assessment, treatment, and support services to children, young adults, and their families. Using a unique collaborative approach that fosters a treatment partnership among parents, caregivers, schools and other professionals, the Center's goal is to help young people achieve their fullest potential and to increase understanding of childhood mental health issues.

The Center's patients exhibit a wide range of learning, behavioral and developmental challenges including, but not restricted to, learning disabilities, ADHD, brain injury, neurological disorders, Tic Disorders, Autism spectrum disorders, Bipolar disorder, and psychotic disorders. Its skilled and caring staff offer the following services:

  • comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations
  • diagnostic evaluations and consultation for Autism spectrum disorders
  • parent and school consultations
  • psychopharmacological consultations
  • neurological evaluations

The Center's staff, acting as a coordinated team, seek to serve as ongoing "consultants" to patients, families, and educational and other professionals as the young person grows through early adulthood. The Center also serves gifted and talented students who may not be demonstrating their full capacities in school. This longitudinal, coordinated approach to care and treatment is uncommon in the traditional patch-work of mental health services typically available for children and adolescents.

All of the Center's staff are on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and have earned national reputations for teaching and research. Their understanding that these issues can be difficult and frustrating for patients and families drives their desire to understand, on a fundamental level, the causes of, and best treatments for, mental health issues. Through their research, cutting-edge knowledge and innovation can be applied to evaluative, diagnostic, and clinical treatment services.

A gift to the Alliance Foundation for Community Health in support of the Center for Child and Adolescent Development is truly an investment in many of the young people who are our future. We believe that the Center's unique strategy of engaging schools, community agencies, and professionals as collaborative partners in the development of a comprehensive treatment plan for a child, and, all the while, seeking new answers to mental health issues through research, is the model for mental health care in the future.
