ROTATIONS AND DIDACTICS
About the rotation sites:
Cambridge Health Alliance is a nationally recognized, award-winning
healthcare system that serves the residents of Cambridge, Somerville
and Boston's Metro-North region. It includes The Cambridge Hospital,
Somerville Hospital, Whidden Memorial Hospital, more than 20 primary
care practices, the Cambridge Public Health Department, the Alliance
Foundation for Community Health, and Network Health - a growing
Medicaid health plan.
The Alliance is a unique model that incorporates public health,
clinical care, academics, and research. As an integrated system,
it offers a wide variety of services including medical specialties,
surgical specialties, obstetrics, and primary care for all ages.
It also offers unique programs for multicultural populations and,
through its Harvard-affiliated Department of Psychiatry, is a strong,
regional provider of critical mental health services.
Windsor Street Health Center, located in a newer, multi-purpose
community center at 119 Windsor Street in Cambridge, is one of Alliance's
busiest primary care sites. Health care services provided include
adult and pediatric primary care medicine, mental health services,
and dentistry. Windsor Street serves as the primary site for provision
of outpatient dental care at the Alliance, with over 17,000 patient
visits per year.
The Harvard
Dental Center (HDC) is the clinical site of the GPR program
at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. It is located on the first
floor at 188 Longwood Avenue in Boston. This facility is also utilized
by the postdoctoral programs in endodontics and periodontics and
the residents practice side by side with world renowned Harvard
faculty. The HDC is a modern facility with 24 dental operatories,
a radiology facility, laboratory, sterilization area, reception
area and business office.
Rotation Descriptions
Anesthesia: This is a three week, full time assignment to the Department
of Anesthesiology. Residents participate in the administration of
general anesthesia to inpatients and ambulatory surgery patients
under direction of a staff anesthesiologist. The rotation is supervised
by Dr. James Quinn, Chief of Anthesiology at Cambridge Health Alliance,
and a Clinical Instructor in Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School.
Primary Care Medicine: This is a three week, full time assignment
to the Department of Medicine to observe and participate in the
management of non-dental patients from admission to discharge in
accordance with ambulatory care and hospital protocols. The rotation
is supervised by Dr. David Bor, Chief of Medicine at Cambridge Health
Alliance, and the Charles S. Davidson Associate Professor of Medicine
at Harvard Medical School.
Patient Care Activities
Clinical Dental Services: Residents are responsible for the comprehensive
and emergency dental care of patients at both the Windsor Street
Health Center (a total of 28 weeks) and the Harvard Dental Center
(a total of 18 weeks) interspersed throughout the year. They are
supervised by full-time and voluntary part-time dental staff, both
general dentists and specialists, all of whom are faculty of Harvard.
The clinical schedules are typically from 8:30am to Noon and from
1:00pm to 5:00pm.
Inpatient Care/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery: Each resident
is assigned to inpatient care/OMFS for eight weeks (12-16 hrs per
week) under the supervision of Dr. Leslie Halpern, Instructor in
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Harvard. Residents are responsible
for the admission, management and follow up of all patients admitted
to dental services. The residents also participate in oral surgery
dental care in the ambulatory clinic, operating room, and rounds.
After Hours On-call Duty: Each resident is required to perform
emergency first call duties for the Cambridge Health Alliance hospitals,
the Harvard Dental Center, and the Forsythe School of Dental Hygiene
on a rotational basis. Program faculty members provide second call
service on a rotational basis as well.
Didactic Program
1. GPR Seminar Series: Held throughout the year on Friday mornings
for a total of about 93 hours. Topics spread across all the various
medical/dental disciplines including literature review and case
presentation. This series is coordinated by Dr. John A. Zdanowicz,
Medical Director, General Practice Residency Program, Instructor
in Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences at Harvard.
2. Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology: A series of topics
for 10 hours to prepare the residents for a career of practice in
a community health care setting and population based dental practice.
This series is coordinated by Dr. Chester Douglass, Acting Chief,
Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Cambridge Health Alliance, Professor
of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology at Harvard.
3. Physical Diagnosis: A 22 hour course taught during June-October
on selected Saturday mornings to provide the residents with the
fundamental knowledge and skills of physical diagnosis needed during
the residency year. This course is taught by Dr. Leslie Halpern,
Oral Surgeon, and Instructor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at
Harvard.
4. Multiculturalism and Diversity: An 8 hour workshop which takes
a problem based approach and is designed to provide the residents
with information and experiences helpful in the management and treatment
of their multicultural and diverse patient population. This workshop
is coordinated by Dr. Greg An, Clinical Instructor in Oral Health
Policy and Epidemiology at Harvard.
